Cees (CCJ) Andriessen (Wageningen, March 20, 1940) is considered one of the leading representatives of non-figurative art from his generation in the Netherlands. His oeuvre consists of drawings and mainly linoleum and woodcuts, including numerous bookplates. The representations are abstract, the shapes clear, the use of color is sparing, but superficially the pages remain empty. Cees Andriessen lives and works in Apeldoorn.
Andriessen was born as the son of a typographer. He attended graphic school in Nijmegen and then started working as a printer. After working in printing companies for a number of years, he became an advertising designer and illustrator. He also started evening studies at the Academy of Visual Arts in Arnhem. In 1969 he established himself as a free artist.
His graphic work includes linocuts, which were created in 1969, and woodcuts, which he has been working on since 1985. Cees Andriessen sees a great kinship between artist and writer, which has resulted in a number of bibliophile publications and collaborative projects with Dutch authors, including Cees Nooteboom, Anna Enquist and Willem van Toorn. Andriessen regularly makes a print based on a poem he has selected, which is published in a special edition by the De Witte Mier Foundation, which he founded in 1994.
