Bettina Lopetro
Bettina Lopetro, born in 1965 in Haarlem, graduated from the Slade School of Fine Art in London. The artist lives alternately in Rotterdam and London.
Lopetro's oeuvre consists mainly of silkscreen prints. She works in an abstract style, but figuration remains a starting point for the composition; both abstract forms and figurative elements appear in her work. In her creations, the primary visual symbolism of ancient cultures is translated into contemporary images. These images are displayed calligraphically.
The work that Lopetro created at the beginning of her career is direct and confrontational. It is a parody of contemporary forms of communication, which are restless and endless, contain a multitude of information and seem to have no clear point of concentration. These creations are characterized by the use of many fluorescent colors. In recent work by Lopetro, the viewer can find many references to the Aboriginals, whom she has carefully studied in Australia. The rituals of the Aboriginals are adapted to modern times, without losing the symbolic value of the images. Typical of these recent works of art is the sober but bright use of color.
