Auguste Brouet was born and raised in a poor family in the popular northeastern districts of Paris and in Les Lilas, in the nearby suburbs. While apprenticed to a lithographer, he struggled for artistic education through the evening drawing classes of Eugène Quignolot, who also briefly attended Gustave Moreau's studio. About 1902 he began to design original etchings, sometimes larger pieces in color, more often smaller works in black and white, as was the growing trend at the time. In the 1920s his etchings came under great demand both in France and the United States.
