On September 17, 1959, the artists Ernst Fuchs, Hunderwasser and Arnulf Rainer founded the "Pintorarium" in Vienna. This work clearly states the reasons and objectives. They show that here after the Second World War one of the first attempts was made to create the linear to doubt the thinking and acting of progress and to look for other things, thoughts and ways.” (Copyright: Hundertwasser Archive, Vienna)

Arnulf Rainer (born 1929 in Baden near Vienna), still active at the age of 94!!, is an Austrian artist known for his use of appropriation and his processes of applying paint over photographs, and adapting existing works of art transforms them by providing them with thick layers of signs/markings. This specific work is one of these so-called “Übermalungen”.
During his early years, Rainer was influenced by surrealism. In 1950, he founded the Hundsgruppe (translated as "dog group") together with Ernst Fuchs, Arik Brauer and Josef Mikl. During this time, Rainer began signing his paintings only with TRR. After In 1954 Rainer's style evolved into abstract 'Destruction of Forms', where blackening, overpainting and masking of illustrations and photographs dominated his later work. About his oeuvre the artist mused: 'The principles of my works are the extinction of expression, permanent covering and contemplative rest [...] My ideal is the completely dark image, full of an overwhelming silence.'
Arnulf Rainer's works can be seen in the Museum of Modern Art, the Arnulf Rainer Museum in Baden, Austria, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. As a culmination of the appreciation of his work, the Arnulf Rainer Museum was opened in New York in 1993 City.
