Eagle Hijner
After drawing lessons from Leon Schulman, Hijner went to the academy in The Hague. He completed his education in Antwerp. He became a member of the Pulchri studio. Arend Hijner had a house in Wemeldinge (Zeeland) and from 1905 to 1915 he regularly stayed in Best in Brabant, where he had farms. According to Mijland and Giersbergen (1999), Hijner was married to Johanna Alexandrina Catharina Bastiana van Zuydam and the couple had five children. Hijner painted life in the countryside and made use of the surroundings. Unlike Van Gogh, for example, Hijner painted light and with (a lot of) colour. Hijner painted - in the words of Mijland and Giersbergen - what was disappearing. Modernities were ignored by him. With the combination of "authentic-disappearing-farm life in combination with a lot of light and colour, Hijner found a unique style. This painting is a beautiful example of this.
