  • Anthonius (Toon) Henricus Koster (Schiedam, January 19, 1913 - Utrecht, November 25, 1989) was a Dutch painter. He is best known for his landscapes with dramatic skies.
    Lifecycle

Koster's father was a hairdresser. Koster himself attended the Rotterdam Art Academy from 1934, where he was trained as a painter and graphic artist. After completing his studies in 1936, he made "study trips" to France, Spain, Germany, Switzerland and North Africa.

In the May days of 1940, Koster was stationed with the field artillery in Monster. In the early years of the war, like Wim Chabot, he received one or more commissions to make murals for emergency shops in Rotterdam, and that is how they came into contact. Koster stood in the tradition of the Hague School, although he himself stated that "direction does not exist". His great example was Jan Hendrik Weissenbruch. Koster's paintings also contain influences from, among others, the Amsterdam School and Flemish Expressionism.

The painter is best known for his landscapes with dramatic skies. His oeuvre, which probably comprises more than a thousand paintings, also consists of still lifes, foreign cityscapes and landscapes, portraits, figures and animals.
