Antje Veldstra was born in 1954 in the Frisian IJsselmeer town of Hindeloopen. In 1971 she moved to Groningen where she trained to become a microbiological analyst. It was not until 1979 that she started her training at the Minerva Art Academy. In 1985 she obtained her diploma in liberal arts. Ancient civilizations have always interested her. In Italy she came into contact with Etruscan culture. From 1988 she made several trips to Italy and stayed several times for a period of 4 months in Tuscany and Sardinia. The Mediterranean world really appeals to her. Her name is inextricably linked to the woodcutting technique. In 1992, the passion for making monumental woodprints resulted in winning the Dutch Graphics Prize. In 2004, she won another prize for her graphic work at the 13th Seoul-Space International Print Biennale. Her work cannot easily be classified into a specific style. Color, shape, structure, abstraction, light and spatiality are keywords that belong to her prints. Her goal is to give the viewer a brief moment of inner reflection. Image out of darkness, light out of image.
