Annemarie de Groot 1952, graduated from the Academie Minerva in Groningen in 1978 and followed a training at the Oskar Kokoschka Academie in Salzburg. Her studio and home have been in the same place at the Ossenmarkt in Groningen for 35 years. She also uses her interior and collection of masks and curiosities from all over the world as a source of inspiration for her paintings.
She has been working as a visual artist for over 40 years and her work can be seen in many collections at home and abroad.
The paintings she makes are characterized by a loose, colorful, painterly touch, her subjects are very varied, she often works on a theme for several years.
In recent years she has been inspired by the symbolism of the Opera, Die Zauberflöte by Mozart and the Opera Madame Butterfly by Puccini. Other sources of inspiration were the theatre, the circus, landscape and nude, all set up with a broad brushstroke, layer upon layer, often depicted with a special symbolism. Her work has a leaning towards the painting of around the turn of the century, with a contemporary touch.
Over the past few years she has been working on a series of paintings that take place in and around the house, with a nostalgia for the peace and quiet of the past without internet and mobile phones. The security of the domestic environment and the harmony of mostly reading women and a cat that walks by.
