André Idserda was born on March 16, 1879 in Vlagtwedde (Groningen). As a child, André was struck by a painting of a Drenthe heath landscape with sheep in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and he decided to start painting. After completing the three-year HBS, he first became a house painter at the Verkadefabrieken in Zaandam. But he continued to pursue his old ideal; studied drawing in Amsterdam and left around 1898 on foot to the Academy of Antwerp, the address for a good and cheap art education. There he met his art brothers Reinhart Dozy and Louis Roessingh from Assen. Idserda was taught there by the history and genre painter Juliaan de Vriendt, director of the Academy, a sign that Idserda's talent had been noticed. He destroyed his work if he didn't like it: "If my work is real, it is very real, if it is unreal, it is unreal." André Idserda was commissioned by the English Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald to paint a portrait of his daughter, but probably did not execute it for fear of being labeled a society painter. Also, when his farm interiors near Laren were in great demand, he refused to continue with this, although it had meant a well-stocked sandwich. Later he became a member of the selective 'Gooische Schildersvereniging'. In the second decade of the 20th century, Meppel started to develop into a painting city.
