| André Idserda was born on March 16, 1879 in Vlagtwedde (Groningen). As a child, André was struck by a painting of a Drenthe heath landscape with sheep in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and he decided to start painting. After completing the three-year HBS, he first became a house painter at the Verkadefabrieken in Zaandam. But he continued to pursue his old ideal; studied drawing in Amsterdam and left around 1898 on foot to the Academy of Antwerp, the address for a good and cheap art education.
