| André Idserda was born on March 16, 1879 in Vlagtwedde (Groningen). As a child, André was struck by a painting of a Drenthe heath landscape with sheep in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and he decided to start painting. After completing the three-year HBS, he first became a house painter at the Verkadefabrieken in Zaandam. But he continued to pursue his old ideal; followed a drawing course in Amsterdam and left around 1898 on foot to the Academy of Antwerp, the address for good and cheap art training. There he met his art brothers Reinhart Dozy and Louis Roessingh from Assen.
