  • Abraham van der Zee was a student at the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague. There he was taught by Frits Jansen and received the Royal Subsidy for three years. Abraham van der Zee was inspired by the Hague School. Eventually he decided to move to Zoutelande on the island of Walcheren. With this move his use of colour also changed. Van der Zee's work became fresher and lighter in colour. He no longer used the colours from his Hague period.

Unfortunately, the war put an end to Abraham van der Zee's Zeeland adventure. The Germans no longer allowed him to paint at his beloved spot. Van der Zee left for Rheden in Gelderland. Here too, he was inspired by the surroundings and painted mainly forest scenes.
