Pop Art

Pop Art is an abbreviation for Popular Art, which originated in America and the United Kingdom and was inspired by consumer society and popular culture. In the early 1950s, the Independent Group in London was already working on popular culture, and the possibility of turning it into art. In America neodada and performance artists also processed products from the consumer society. Advertising, graphic design and product design in particular had a strong appeal. The Pop Art movement developed from this. Within Pop Art much use is made of products from everyday life. The movement can be seen as a reaction to abstract expressionism. Emotion is less important for Pop Art artists. The lack of social commentary and political criticism linked Pop Art with other art forms of the same period, such as minimalism and post-painterly abstraction. Pop Art was spread throughout the United States and the rest of Europe through exhibitions.
