Founded in 1979 - dissolved in 1984
In 1979 a new neo-expressionist group of painters formed in the Mülheim district of Cologne. This group called itself the Mülheimer Freiheit, after the address where the six men of the group owned a joint studio, Mülheimer Freiheit Nr. 110. This studio was located in a dull district of Cologne, where the men wanted to practice expressive, wild, free painting. They started with exhibitions in Germany, but soon there were several exhibitions in the Netherlands. The group can be compared to the French painters of the Figuration Libre.
