Amsterdam Joffers

The Amsterdamse Joffers were a group of female artists who exhibited together at the end of the 19th century. All the women had studied at the Rijksakademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. Due to the prevailing social view that it was inappropriate for women to work outside the home, the Amsterdam Joffers mainly painted still lifes, portraits, interiors and genre scenes. They painted in a late impressionist style and set an example for many female artists.
