Het Signaal was an expressionist group of artists that was founded in Bergen. Many Dutch artists have lived and worked in Bergen and is known as an artists' colony. The Bergen School was also active at the time of Het Signaal. The artists affiliated with Het Signaal wanted to portray reality with inspiration. This deep experience of reality was created by applying heavy colors and lines, and bright color contrasts. The Signaal would have great significance for the manifestation of expressionism in the Netherlands. In 1918 the members of Het Signaal exhibited their work in Park Meerwijk, which resulted in
