Art-loving Society Pictura

Kunstloving Genootschap Pictura in Groningen was founded at a time when similar organizations arose throughout the Netherlands, such as Pulchri Studio in The Hague, Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam, Kunstliefde in Utrecht and Pictura in Dordrecht. It was not until 1934 that Pictura got its own building where they could hold exhibitions. Art life flourished in Groningen in the latter part of the nineteenth century. Pictura played a role in this by giving the population of Groningen the opportunity to come into contact with developments within the visual arts. They did this by organizing exhibitions, lectures and art reviews. Kunstloving Genootschap Pictura developed a progressive vision that was aimed at the modern, individual artist. Pictura still organizes exhibitions throughout the year with work by young talents and renowned artists from the north of the Netherlands.
