De Opbouw was an association that was founded in 1920 by architect Willem Kromhout. According to this group, homes had to be well built and offer a lot of light, air and space for the residents. Building had to remain cheap, so we looked at where material could be saved.
The 8 was an association founded by a group of young architects in 1927. They focused on architecture arising from the needs of society, emphasizing the serving function of design. The architectural style is essentially related to functionalism, in addition De 8 had close ties with the Amsterdam School, the New Building and the New Objectivity. In 1927 De 8 and De Opbouw started working together, bringing together the Amsterdam and Rotterdam. In 1932 a common magazine was created.
