CoBrA

The name CoBrA originated from the initials of the capitals where the founders of this group came from: Copenhague, Bruxelles and Amsterdam. The group was an avant-garde movement that was very important in European art immediately after the Second World War. The Cobra group was short-lived, but it did have an influence on both a stylistic level and on ideals about society for a long time to come. Cobra turned against academism because of the visual aesthetic laws, and against painting in which too much emphasis was placed on the intellectual. According to Cobra, inspiration could best be drawn from the pure, innocent children's drawing. Spontaneity and fantasy were therefore what characterized the art of the Cobra artists.
