Carravagists

Carravagism is an art movement from the 17th century. The artists within this movement are inspired by the work of the Italian master painter Caravaggio. He was best known for the way he worked with light and for his portrayal of everyday people as saints. He achieved theatrical effects by illuminating the scenes with a light source 'from within'. Within the Netherlands, the Utrecht Caravaggists were a separate group. This group traveled to Italy and were inspired by the work of the Italian. Once back in Utrecht, the Caravaggists also inspired other Dutch artists, including Rembrandt.
