Theo Kley was born in Rotterdam, after the bombing in Rotterdam his family moved to Breda. There he trained as an instrument maker and goldsmith. After this, Kley decided to follow a four-year course: “Industrial designer, illustrator and advertising designer” at the Academy of Art and Design Sint Joost, which he completed in 1955. Two years later he studied at the Post-Academic Institute for Visual Arts the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht.
In 1960 Kley had completed the Jan van Eyck and decided to travel. From 1960 to 1961 he made study trips through Southern Europe and visited Italy, the South of France, Spain and Portugal. After this, Kley stayed in south-east Turkey. And he added a one-year stay in Central Africa (Rhodesia, Kenya) and became inspired and fascinated by the Bush-an-rock paintings. After this period of travel, he married sculptor Josephine van den Bergh in 1964, and they settled in Amsterdam.
In the 1960s, Kley co-founded the Insect Sect, which organized cheerful happenings. In 1969 Kley co-wrote the television opera Mother with Roelof Kiers (VPRO), what's wrong with this planet.
The village of Ruigoord became a base for Theo Kley, in 1996 he also exchanged his house in the heart of Amsterdam for a hut in nature on the Ruigoord site. Friends and visitors from Amsterdam can enjoy coffee, tea and art in Theo's Theetuin.
