Painter Joe Andoe, born in 1955 in Tulsa (Oklahoma), United States, after a turbulent period full of drugs in the 1970s, managed to graduate in 1981 with a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Oklahoma in Norman. Andoe currently lives and works in New York. Although Andoe is now also active as a writer, he is best known for his work of oil painting. His fairly minimalist paintings usually consist of only one or two colors. These are mainly earth tones, black and white. The artist creates his work by applying paint to the canvas, cutting the lines of his subject into the paint and then wiping the remaining wet paint off the canvas. This leaves a slightly coarse texture on the canvas. In combination with the dark, already dried, paint of the background, this then forms a clear representation of the material to be depicted. It is a contrasting play between light and dark, in which Andoe says he is looking to reduce the images to their so-called blueprint.
