The eventful artist life of Jeanne Bieruma Oosting
Adriana Johanna Wilhelmina (Jeanne) Bieruma Oosting was born in 1898 in Leeuwarden as a descendant of Frisian nobility. She spent her childhood on country estates, surrounded by nature. Despite her wish to study like her brother Hans, Jeanne was mainly home-schooled. With the help of her mother, she still managed to take individual painting and drawing lessons, including in Haarlem and The Hague. In 1929, Jeanne Bieruma Oosting moved to Paris against the wishes of her parents to continue to focus on being an artist, accompanied by artists such as Conrad Kickert, Wim Oepts and Gerard Hordijk. In 1937 she even won a prize at the World's Fair.
As the Second World War approaches, Jeanne returns to the Netherlands, and joins Arti, De Grafische and the Dutch Circle of Drawing Artists, among others, where she was active as a member and exhibited a lot. With her graphic experience she manages to win all kinds of assignments. While her work in the 1930s is mainly seen as melancholy, her oeuvre after the Second World War takes on a more colorful and cheerful character.
