Hörwarter began his painting studies at the Vienna School of Applied Arts under Ferdinand Laufberger and was assistant to Michael Rieser and Albert Ilg from 1870 to 1875 and to Rieser from 1875 to 1876.
He then became a teacher at the Vienna State Drawing School, while at the same time continuing his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under August Eisenmenger.
